Batemans Bay Thai Restaurant

With such an unassuming name, you'd be forgiven for under-estimating the standard of cuisine at this recent addition to the South Coast restaurant scene.

In the last few weeks, we've ordered take-away Thai, had an a-la-carte Thai meal followed by another takeaway, and on each occassion we've been blown away by the standard of the offering and the service.

When we dined in, as a group of 2 couples, the consensus was that the barometer of a Thai restaurant is the quality of their 'Money Bags'. So we decided to apply the test, by ordering a round of this traditional entree all round. The Bay Thai restaurant leaped over this hurdle with ease and then followed up with a sensational offering of Thai Calamari, Sang Choi Bow (my personal favourite) and Green Curry with Prawns.

Our group included some very travelled people who've sampled Asian food in many cities around the world yet the accolades for this experience were flowing.

If the Bay Thai restaurant can mantain the standards they've set in their opening few weeks, then they will have raised the bar on the South Coast eateries scene for others to aim for.

Furthermore, the value for money was excellent with an average price of $20 each for takeaway and $30 each for dine-in meals.

Terrible food
by: Chris

Having read all the glowing reviews in tripadvisor, I was expecting something special. What I got was a BIG disappointment.
I ordered satay chicken, Larb (pork) and green curry chicken, and some rice.
Satay - it didn't look "grilled". It didn't look as if there was any searing hot cooking applied to it at all. No evidence of it fried, grilled, or even deep fried. The meat was barely warm. Tasted bland and awful This is the FIRST time in my life I did not finish a satay.
Larb - no real taste to it. No tang and not spicy. Not until after I ate half of the plate that I can feel a little heat from chilli. Tasted like sweetened fish sauce. That's all it was.
Green curry - taste of sweet coconut milk with a trace of green curry in the after taste. And the worse part.... there were 9 - yes, NINE types of vegetables in it, including wombok (who put wombok in green curry???)

I shall not return nor recommend this to anyone as an "authentic Thai" restaurant. There is nothing authentic about the food here.
(by the way, I'm Thai)

DO NOT GO THERE if you want real Thai food!
by: Chris

I was there in June 2014. If the restaurant was as good as all the reviews here (and from other sources) is true then the place has greatly gone downhill since they were written.
The food was terrible.
I ordered satay chicken, Larb (pork) and green curry chicken, and some rice.
Satay - Not only it didn't look "grilled",it didn't look as if there was any radiant heat was applied to it. As much as I like my satay grilled, this one did NOT even show any evidence of frying, or even deep fried. The meat looked boiled then covered with the yellow basting. I suspect it was put in the microwave oven and not even for long enough. This is the FIRST time in my life I did not finish a satay.
Larb - when it came out, it looked great! It presented a lot better than the larb from many other restaurants I have been to. I thought this could make up for the satay. Disappointingly, it has no real taste to it. No tang and not spicy. Not until after I ate half of the plate that I can feel a little heat from chilli. Tasted like sweetened fish sauce, that's all.
Green curry - taste of sweet coconut milk with a trace of green curry in the after taste. And the worse part.... in the curry were 9 - yes, NINE types of vegetables in it. (Wombok in green curry???)

Either, I am in a different place to where everyone else has been for this review, or it was the chef's night off and they got someone else to prepare the food.

I shall not return nor recommend this to anyone as a "Thai" restaurant.

SOUTH COAST FINEST
by: Anita and Mike

My husband and I began our love affair with this restaurant in Ulladulla about a year ago, much to our disbelief they moved to the Bay. Once we found their location we were back to visiting them once a month, we later found out they also have a restaurant in Moyura which we travelled to just to have lunch and catch up with the friendly staff...this is the best Thai, best service , big portions and also the best value for money..definitely not your average oily Thai, the Veges are so fresh we especially loveee the pad Thai with the freshest bean shoots on top...thanks guys for making our dinners and lunches an easy choice and never a disappointment ...

Do not miss this place!

Absolutely the BEST Thai food my husband & I have ever eaten. I had a veggie/tofu in black bean dish, and the veggies were so fresh that they tasted (and crunched) like they had just been picked from a garden out the back. My husband had some sort of duck dish, and said it was amazing. I tried the sauce from his dish on some of my rice, incredible! Service was also wonderful, and the decor is definitely a step-up from the typical 'dodgy' Thai place. Will definitely be going back here next time we are in Batemans Bay.
