Bored Bay Boomers on a Budget ?
by Dawn Simpson
Are you a bored baby boomer, living in Batemans Bay, on a budget?
Fear no more! Every so often, we'll be running a story featuring a FREE local beauty spot, that is a well-kept secret.
Why worry about exotic but expensive Egypt, the Greek Islands, Tahiti or a yuppie island in Fiji, when here on the South Coast we have the best FREE exotic hideaways in the world!
If you have transport, then any of the local destinations are within your reach.
Each month, we will provide the map co-ordinates, available from the Batemans Bay Tourist Information Centre, special features of the destination and suggested 'fare' to share with who ever accompanies you on this little trip to paradise.
DON'T go alone .... this is too good to keep secret!
This month we are featuring Cullendulla Nature Reserve.
Wow! What a great place!
It is thought that Cullendulla means 'place of mussels' and was originally inhabited by the local Yuin people. With landscape varying from bush track to mudflat, this is a true eco experience.
Plitvice National Park of Croatia is renowned for it's pristine 'over water' walks.
Here in the Bay we have Cullendulla Creek with over water walks PLUS an abundance of native flora and fauna. This destination has it all, ancient burial grounds, river and grey mangroves, beautiful black swans, uncommon 'chenier' dunes which have been studied by scientists from all over the world and the most magnificent scenery. If you are a grand parent, why not take the grand children with you and as most youngsters are interested in dinosaurs, go slowly and quietly and show them our very own pre historic fauna in the guise of very cute little gecko lizards. Boards describing the inhabitants of the mangroves are spaced along the boardwalk.
Whilst all of this is exciting, there is a feeling of peace in the Cullendulla Reserve that is hard to imagine, when it is really just five minutes from the busy CBD.
The easy 2 km walk will take you approximately 45 minutes, unless you are with a loved one and you may want to stop and admire more than the view!
How to get there:
Enter into Surfside via Peninsula Dr or Berrima Pde, north of Batemans Bay Bridge. Drive to the northern end of Myamba Pde, park in the designated parking area, walk along the boardwalk, follow the signs through a bush track turning right onto the over water boardwalk shown in the photo, return along the beach or on the path parallel to the beach. Remember we are on a budget so, we took our thermos and a basket full of Mandarin & Coconut Muffins to share with any other folk we met on the way. The cost? Priceless ! plus a couple of litres of petrol!
Mandarin and Coconut Muffins.
3 cups Self Raising Flour, well sifted
½ teaspoon salt
1 tin of mandarin segments (drained but liquid retained and added with liquids)
1 cup of sugar
2 googy eggs
½ cup light taste healthy, olive oil
1 cup of shredded coconut, dessicated will do if you dont have shredded
1 cup of milk, low fat if you like!
Put all the dry ingredients into a large bowl. Put all the liquid ingredients into a blender and blend like h
.! Combine the two, add the mandarin segments, stir a little, remember muffin batter is meant to be slightly lumpy, place in greased muffin tins and cook for 18-20 mins. Less time if small muffin tins. Makes enough to share
..or about 12 big ones. Mmmm, so nice, hope they make it to the picnic basket!
