Lawn Bowls on the South Coast

Lawn bowls is an ancient game. In 1788, when Captain Cook landed on the Sandwich Islands he found that the natives were playing a game with rounded balls. What these balls were made of is not documented.

It is also known that the Maoris of New Zealand played a game similar to bowls, prior to the arrival of Europeans. It is documented that lawn bowls was played in England as early as the 12th Century. Most likely bowls was being played there much earlier than this. From the 15th Century on balls made of ash, oak, holly, and boxwood were being used by English bowlers.

And... here's another interesting piece of bowls history: Various kings of England banned the game of bowls because its popularity began to interfere with the practice of archery, an important activity that was used to protect the country.
