Bowls is an ancient game. In 1788, when Captain Cook landed on the Sandwich Islands he found that the natives were playing a game with rounded balls. What these balls were made of is not documented.

It is also known that the Maoris of New Zealand played a game similar to bowls, prior to the arrival of Europeans. It is documented that lawn bowls was played in England as early as the 12th Century. Most likely bowls was being played there much earlier than this. From the 15th Century on balls made of ash, oak, holly, and boxwood were being used by English bowlers.

And... here's another interesting piece of bowls history: Various kings of England banned the game of bowls because its popularity began to interfere with the practice of archery, an important activity that was used to protect the country.

Bowlers visiting the South Coast can enjoy a smorgasbord of Bowling Clubs [see list below].
Visitors are always welcome at the local clubs and members are more than happy to induct first timers into the delights of a game of bowls. All clubs offer opportunities for competitive and social bowlers and most have restaurants and bistros for visitors.

Most clubs are organized with a ladies bowls clubs and a mens' bowls club. Various events are played ranging from social bowls, including jackpot social bowls with mufti dress rules, twilight bowls, mixed social bowls and mixed bowls, right through to senior bowls and championship pennants with dress uniform/creams.

Batemans Bay Bowling & Recreation Club The Batemans Bay Bowling & Recreation Club. is just a short stroll from the centre of beautiful Batemans Bay on the South Coast of NSW.The club features 4 excellent bowling greens, with two greens now under lights. The Bay Bridge Bistro is open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner and provides an extensive bistro menu. BBQ facilities available for a get together and a game of bowls. You can also enjoy a game of bingo, watch a game of cricket or rugby league on the oval next door. The Sports bar features full TAB facilities and with fully catered function rooms and an auditorium, the Bay Bowlo caters for social events, dances, concerts, weddings, private and corporate functions and conventions.

On Mondays and Thursdays [the men] play 21 ends of triples, in mufti, with cards being called at 1:00pm”. Our Ladies are very friendly, welcoming visitors to join them for a morning of bowls and fellowship. On Tuesdays we play 21 ends of triples, in creams with cards being called at 10:30am.Mixed Social Bowls 21 ends of triples are played, in mufti, with cards being called at 1:00pm.
