    Pet Friendly Vacation Travel Tips:
  • Check precisely what accommodation operators mean when they say "pet-friendly". Are pets allowed inside? Are there fenced, safe areas? Make sure you and your pet are comfortable with the conditions before booking.
  • Ensure your pet is secured when driving, either in a pet crate, by a dog harness connected to a seat belt, or by a divider in the cargo area of your vehicle
  • Don’t leave your pets unattended in your vehicle. Temperatures can vary quickly and dramatically, especially in summer.
  • Alleviating Stress To make your holiday as comfortable as possible, it is always a good idea to take any special bedding and toys that your pet may be used to.
  • Many hotels, B&Bs and other accommodation operators will insist that your pet’s vaccinations are up to date. Travel with the vaccination papers or check with the accommodation operator.
  • ID Tags Ensure that your dog has an ID tag with your name and phone number in case you were to be accidentally separated. Better still, a microchip ID tag will give positive identification, if required.
  • Protection from Ticks If you're travelling along the South Coast, you'll need to protect your dog against the dangerous Paralysis Tick. But remember, your dog will be mixing with the locals, whether by coming into contact with native wildlife or other travelling pets.
Easy to apply, with just a few drops to your dog's coat, We recommend Frontline or Advantix, which according to the manufacturer "acts as a barrier to repel Paralysis Tick, Brown Dog or Bush Tick, mosquitoes, sand flies and other biting insects. In fact, it's the only spot-on product proven to repel paralysis ticks. As for any fleas, it puts an end to them feeding within 3-5 minutes, stopping them from making your dog's life a misery and reduces the incidence of Flea Allergy Dermatitis. And even when your dog gets wet or goes swimming you can rely on Advantix to keep on working".
For optimal protection - we recommend that you start your treatment a month before travelling. To safeguard against Paralysis Tick, repeat the treatment every 14 days.
  • Local councils also have some restricted areas such as near children’s playgrounds and shorebird nesting areas. Check with Visitor Information Centres for more details.
  • Some areas such as national parks are refuges for native animals. There are restrictions for dogs and domestic pets in national parks, state conservation areas, nature reserves, historic sites and Aboriginal heritage areas.

More Pet Friendly Vacation Tips

National parks and reserves are refuges for native animals. Dogs and other domestic pets (other than trained assistance animals such as guide dogs) must not be taken into national parks, state conservation areas, nature reserves, historic sites or Aboriginal areas, because*:

  • Native animals see dogs as predators. The lasting scent left by dogs can easily scare small animals and birds away from their homes, often causing them to leave their young unprotected.
  • Dog faeces carry diseases which can be harmful to wildlife and people, and also add nutrients to the soil, increasing the spread of weeds.
  • If dogs and other domestic pets have frightened native animals away from popular visitor areas, there will be no wildlife for other visitors to see.
  • Dogs can interfere with the enjoyment of other park visitors.
