Saltwater Fishing Vacations

Saltwater fishing - South Coast NSW
The South Coast of NSW is known as one of the best fishing destinations in Australia (people catch lots of fish here).

And, since the designation of the Batemans Marine Park it means that breeding grounds like the mangroves, sponge gardens, kelp beds and sea grass habitats are now protected... while still leaving over 80% of the park accessible to the recreational fisher.

There are now more fish to catch, and this park guarantees estuary and saltwater fishing for future generations of fishers. This is truly good news for fishing on the South coast because virtually any good eating fish or sports fish can be caught here. This park's creation guarantees stable fish stock into the future.

In the estuaries you will get black bream, whiting, mulloway and big dusky flathead. Off the beaches there are plenty of good sized tailor, salmon, and gummy sharks. Inshore, many reefs host a wide variety of edible species such as kingfish, snapper and the prized Tassie Trumpeter. Go out further to the Continental Shelf to find the big game species such as blue, black and striped marlin, yellowfin tuna, albacore and a variety of shark species. The truth is wherever you choose to cast your line along the South coast you will catch a wide range of decent sized fish.

On the South coast you can go Saltwater fishing, Reef fishing, Offshore and Big-game to Estuary fishing, Beach, River and Inlet fishing, the lot!

Some of our favorite estuary and saltwater fishing locations in this "Land of many waters" (as the Aboriginal people named the area) are...

Clyde River
Montague Island
Moruya River
Murramarang National Park
Mystery Bay
Tuross Estuary
Wagonga Inlet, Narooma

Local knowledge...

The family expert on the local fishing on the South Coast is 'Pop', my father-in-law, who has been an avid fisherman especially, small fishing boats, on the South Coast waters for nearly 50 years. I asked him for a brief background.  He gave me the following precis.

Pop's Fishing Experience

"I've fished the South Coast since the early 1960's. I recall early expeditions fishing the rocks around Tathra catching Blue Groper, leatherjacket, snapper, parrotfish and pigfish. In these early times spear fishing was very widespread and it seemed to decimate the amount of fish around the rocks.

My family learned to fish off the Tathra Wharf and caught yellowtail, mackerell and trevally.

We then started boating in that area and commonly filled a boat with big flathead. We were caravanning then and the kids would be sent around the van park giving away all of the extra
flathead fillets that we couldn't eat. Quite often we almost fed the entire park!

Wide out on the reefs there were plenty of nanagai, mowong and snapper. We also fished for blackfish off the rocks - float fishing.

The Wagonga Inlet at Narooma was a favourite spot and we fished for whiting, bream and flathead with great success. Since those days we have mostly fished the Broulee and Moruya area where the same type of fish are in goodly numbers.

The beach fishing along these waters is also good with salmon, tailor, whiting and bream being caught".

While Pop has observed a gradual reduction in fish numbers over the last half-century the declaration of the Batemans Marine Park now protects breeding grounds which will improve the numbers of fish for years to come.

Furthermore, the proceeds of the fishing licence fees are being invested in various projects, including artificial reef installations which are designed to improve recreational fishing opportunities in a strategic way.

So, as you can see, the South coast of NSW provides many opportunities for all types and styles of fishing for both the recreational and sports fisherman..
