Snorkeling Pretty Point Bay, South Coast NSW
by Bill Barker
(South Coast NSW)
This is a reminder about our snorkeling outing this Sunday 19 December at Pretty Point Bay. We will meet 9.30 at the access point to the beach, which is on Illabunda Drive, which can be accessed from George Bass Drive.
As mentioned earlier, this is both for those who want to do the methodology training with a view to taking part in our marine life snorkel survey program as well as for those who just want to go out for a good time. Those who have done the training before are welcome to do it again as a refresher.
Anyone interested in participating in the training or coming along for a snorkel should contact me by email, phone 4473 5304 or mobile 0417 237 639 (if you've already informed me you are coming, you don't have to do so again). If you have any questions don't hesitate to call.
Please bring all your gear - wetsuits, mask and snorkel, fins, a weightbelt and a slate if you have one, water and sunscreen. I will bring a couple of lines, slates, waterproof paper and ID cards, I will have some spare weightbelts and weights, but if you need other gear items, you will have to hire them. Total Eco Adventures at Broulee has a good deal for NCMG members (4471 6969). Other options are Indepth Scuba at Batemans Bay (4472 9930) or The Ocean Hut Narooma (4476 2278). Realistically, if you are going to participate effectively in the survey program, you will need to have all your own gear sooner or later. The water is still cool (17 degrees).
At this stage, the weather looks OK for Sunday. If there is any change, I propose that we go to Pretty Point anyway and see how it looks. We can always go to nearby Barlings Beach.
A coffee at the Muffin Shop at Mossy Point is always enjoyable after a spell in the water so I am proposing we go there when we have finished our snorkeling. Other members are welcome to join us for a get together, even if you aren't on the snorkeling outing. I expect we will be there around 1230.
The other announcement about snorkeling is that, after discussion with the charter operator, I have decided to postpone the snorkel with the seals trip to Sunday, 30 January. It would be very much appreciated if those interested could get back to me early to let me know they are coming. The cost was $77 adults $55 children last year and will probably be about the same this year. It is preferable if we can fill the boat, but for that to happen I need to know in advance. If we don't have the numbers, the charter operator will take other customers, with the result that NCMG members who make up their minds late might miss out. Also, if there are any people who can't make it on the 30th, but who would like to go on the 16th, get in touch with me and I will see what I can work out. We could probably run an extra trip on the 16th.
If you are coming to any of these events and your financial membership is not current, please bring your subscription fee ($10 per person). If you are not sure about the status of your membership, please contact Membership Secretary Rachel McInnes on 0419 863 966 or 4473 5972.
