Wildlife cruising at Montague Island

10th Oct 2011

We've just started doing tours out to Montague Island and I thought I would fill you in on what we are offering.

We offer a range of trips. Light refreshments are provided. Just cold drinks and biscuits on 2 ½ hour trips. Muffins and hot drinks plus biscuits and cold drinks on 4 hour or longer trips. . We often have dolphins riding the bow wave and customers can stand or sit down the front to watch them play. We might see whales on route at this time of year. There are masses of birds sitting on eggs at Montague Island at the moment and in a week or so there will be thousands of baby birds! Unfortunately all trips are reliant on minimum numbers so it is always worth calling to see what we have already booked. Customers do always have the option of course of paying the extra to cover the minimum cost. If we then book more people we can give them a refund of any extra they paid.

A) 2 ½ hour trip including 1 hour lighthouse visit with a NPWS guide plus a visit to the fur seal colony. At present this is an afternoon trip leaving Narooma at 12.30pm and returning at 3.00pm. The cost is $95 per head.

B) 4 hour trip which includes a 2 ½ hour NPWS guided tour of the island and lighthouse plus a visit to the seal colony. This trip leaves the wharf at 9am and returns at 1pm. The cost is $105 per head.

C) 4 hour Eco Adventure which includes 1 hour lighthouse tour and birdlife viewing with NPWS guide, followed by a visit to the fur seal colonies with opportunity for interactive snorkelling fun plus 1 ½ hours of whale watching adventure and afternoon tea. Fins, goggles and snorkels and afternoon tea are provided. ( not wetsuits). This trip leaves at 12.30 and returns at 4.30pm. The ultimate wildlife experience! Seals, birds, whales, plus usually dolphins! The cost is $125 per head.

We also still offer all our other trips- reef fishing trips of varying lengths from 4 hour to full day, snorkelling with seals, scuba diving at any of the 12 or so sites we use at Montague or down to the shipwreck, plus wildlife cruises which may involve some light handline fishing or a quick snorkel or swim with the seals, and of course straight whale watching trips. If you like I can send you a price list of our basic trips.

Please call if you have any questions. We can be far more flexible than the bookeasy site allows and try to cater for particular interests or time changes.

Kind regards
Kathie Thackray

Scuba Diving a South Coast Ship wreck

by Kathie

Dive the shipwrecked Lady Darling

Dive the shipwrecked Lady Darling

One of our local dive operators has scheduled a dive on the SS Lady Darling for Sunday 29th August and have just 7 vacancies. It's a wonderful dive and very sought after. The cost is $100 per head".

The skipper says the wreck dive "is not always possible due to the strong currents that sometimes prevail at the dive site.

In the event that the wreck dive is not a goer, we offer a double dive at Montague Island (which is also always fantastic!) Unfortunately, we never know for sure until we get half way to the wreck if it will be diveable. We put a buoy out and can read the currents, depending on what happens to it.

Spring is a great time for underwater diving on the South Coast - there are masses of seals to play with and we often see whales during the trip. The water can be a bit cool still, but it's well worth it. On Tuesdays, Fridays and weekends we provide a dive guide to show the best sites - either Martin or our other skipper, Steve who is also a very keen diver.

Whale watching trips will be in full swing by the start of September. We plan to keep our prices at $77 this season- Our trip goes for 2 ½ hours and includes a visit to the fur seal colonies at Montague Island".

Snorkel with the seals ! Jan 30th 2011

NATURE COAST MARINE GROUP - Snorkel with the seals !

This is a reminder for anyone interested in joining our trip to Montague Island to snorkel with the seals. There are still vacancies on the boat if you want to join us.

It is an amazing experience to be in the water with the seals (see the pic below). Their effortless acrobatics are amazing as they zip around and up and down, one second coming close to you, the next disappearing in a stream of bubbles. It is truly an unforgettable experience. While they are wild animals and should be treated with respect, the seals are not at all aggressive and seem as keen on having fun as their human visitors.

It doesn't look as though we will fill the boat, so the trip will probably combine with a separate group of people who will be on a tour of the island. We will leave the Narooma Town Wharf at around 9.30 on Sunday 30 January, returning around 1.30 or 2.00. We will go with Narooma Charters, who are experienced at doing this and who have looked after us in the past. People will need to be at the wharf (Bluewater Drive, just past the swimming pool) at 9.15. The cost will be $77 per person for adults and $55 per child 15 years and under. Payment is made on boarding and can be made by cash or credit card.

It is about a 30 minute trip to the island. After cruising around the island and dropping off the tourists, we would then get in the water for two or three snorkels, including probably two with the seals, for 30 minutes to 1 hour at a time.

People participating should be able to swim and feel generally comfortable in the water. Entry to and exit from the water will be from the boat and people will generally stay close to the boat. People participating will need mask, snorkels, fins and wetsuits (of whatever kind). If people don't have their own they can be hired from Total Eco Adventures, Broulee (4471 6969), the Ocean Hut, Narooma (4476 2278), or Indepth Scuba at Batemans Bay (4472 9930). In addition, Narooma Charters has masks, snorkels and fins on the boat, but anyone planning on this would need to check in advance. People can snorkel without a wetsuit, of course, but they will probably get cold quickly and the wetsuit provides addtional buoyancy as well. The usual hats, sunscreen, water, warm jacket, towel and camera (underwater if possible) should also be brought. If you are concerned about seasickness, buy an appropriate medicine from the chemist and take it before the boat leaves.

I will provide a briefing and snorkeling tips. The boat operator provides some basic refreshments (tea, coffee etc).

Any trip like this is weather dependent, of course. The seals are in a generally sheltered location and the island offers several other sites.

If you are interested in this great trip, please get back to me by email or phone (4473 5304) as soon as possible.

Anyone wishing to participate who is not an NCMG member would need to join, which can be done on the spot (subscription fee $10 per person).
